Gateway is not counting pulses (sensor is not detecting pulses)
If your gateway is no longer counting pulses, itβs usually either a sensor/detection issue or a wiring/configuration issue. Follow the steps below from quick checks to deeper troubleshooting.
Step 1: Check whether the sensor is still working
A) Yellow inductive sensor (3-wire)
- HoldΒ metalΒ in front of theΒ black round spotΒ on the sensor.
- Check whether theΒ red LED turns onΒ when metal is detected.
- Red LED turns on when detecting?Β β Go toΒ Step 2.
- Red LED does not turn on?Β β Check the sensor itself (power/defective sensor/cable) or test with another sensor.
Step 2: Check the connection to the gateway (wiring)
Important: never swap the wires. One wire in the wrong position can cause the gateway to stop detecting pulses or could damage the gateway!
A) Inductive (yellow) 3-wire sensor β correct wiring
- 12V β brown
- GND β blue
- S1 β black
Verify that they are connected exactly like this. If needed, disconnect the wires and reconnect them properly.
B) Reed sensor (magnetic) β 2-wire connection
- Check that theΒ 2 wiresΒ of the reed sensor are connected correctly to the gateway.
- Make sure the reed sensor is connected to:
- 12V
- S1
Never connect GND to a 2-wire sensor.
GND should only be used for sensors that are designed for it (such as the 3-wire inductive sensor).
If the wiring is correct, go to Step 3.
Step 3: Check in the gateway log whether pulses are being counted
- Open the gateway log page:
https://smartgateways.nl/en/kb/view-gateway-log/ - Wait until the gateway is connected to Wi-Fi (yourΒ IP addressΒ should be shown in the log).
- Find the section whereΒ pulse/countingΒ is displayed.
Pay attention to:
- AreΒ valueΒ andΒ factorΒ set correctly?
- Were these values entered as intended for your sensor/application?
Examples and correct settings are provided in the installation guide:
https://smartgateways.nl/en/support/
If value or factor are not filled in correctly, it may look like no pulses are being counted, or the counts may be calculated incorrectly. Value and factor must always be filled in.
Step 4: Test again with metal/magnet + log check
Inductive sensor (yellow)
- Hold metal again in front of the black spot.
- Check whether the gateway log showsΒ pulses/values changing.
Reed sensor (magnetic)
- Test with aΒ magnetΒ on the reed sensor.
- Check the gateway log again to confirm that pulses are actually being registered.
Step 5: Improve positioning/alignment
If everything is wired correctly but you still donβt get proper readings:
- Reposition the sensor on the meter so it is as close as possible to theΒ metalΒ orΒ magnet.
- Even small distance changes can cause the sensor to switch inconsistently (or not at all).
Quick checklist
- Β The log value/pulse count changes during the test
- Β Sensor works:Β LED on when metal is present / reed switches with a magnet
- Β Inductive sensor wiring:Β 12V = brown, GND = blue, S1 = blackΒ (never swap)
- Β Reed sensor wiring:Β 12V and S1 connected, no GND on a 2-wire sensor
- Β In the log:Β value and factorΒ entered correctly
- Β Sensor repositioned (as close as possible to metal/magnet)
