Meter value drops back

The problem

After a reboot or a power interruption, your meter reading jumps back to an older value. This happens because the gateway restores a backup of up to 4 hours old after the outage.

Why does this happen?

  • The gateway automatically saves a backup of the meter reading every 4 hours
  • After a power interruption, this last backup is restored
  • The older the backup, the larger the deviation in your displayed meter reading

Step 1: Prevent the issue (IMPORTANT!)

This is usually caused by many reboots. So check first:

A) Update to the latest firmware

  • Open the Firmware menu of your gateway
  • Install the latest version

B) Ensure stable power

  • Use your own USB power adapter (not via a modem, TV, or PC)
  • Replace the power adapter preventively
  • Also replace the USB cable with a better one: thin USB cables have high resistance
  • Use thicker USB cables with a maximum length of 1 meter
  • Consider a USB power bank with passthrough function as a mini-UPS

C) Minimize power interruptions

  • Make sure your gateway has no unexpected reboots anymore
  • This prevents old backups from being restored

✅ No more reboots = no more backtracking meter readings!

Step 2: Correct incorrect meter readings in Home Assistant

Only for Home Assistant with the Energy Dashboard:

If your meter readings have already been stored incorrectly, you can correct them here:
https://haprofs.com/home-assistant-correct-energy-data/

How?

  • Open Home Assistant
  • Go to Settings → Developer Tools → Statistics
  • Find the sensor with the wrong value (e.g. “Low Tariff Usage”)
  • Click the icon to the left of the sensor
  • Select the time when the error occurred

TIP: Click “OUTLIERS” and Home Assistant will automatically look for suspicious values.

  • Change the value to the correct one or enter 0
  • Click Adjust
  • Check your Energy Dashboard — the graphs should now be correct

Note: This only works for the standard Home Assistant Energy Dashboard. For other dashboards (such as the Smart Gateways dashboard), you must wait until the old data is automatically replaced after about a week.

Step 3: Check your settings

For the Smart Gateways Dashboard

You don’t need to do anything — the dashboard corrects itself automatically after about a week.

For the Home Assistant Energy Dashboard

Follow Step 2 above to manually correct the data.

Checklist

✅ Firmware updated to the latest version
✅ Stable power installed (own adapter, better USB cable)
✅ Gateway tested for stability for at least 48 hours

Meter reading still drops back? → Correct manually in Home Assistant (Step 2)
