P1 splitter not working or connected device not working

If the P1 splitter does not work as expected, there can be several possible causes. In many cases, the issue is related to the cabling, power supply, connected equipment, or firmware.

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot the problem.

1) Check the cable connected to the smart meter

Always use the supplied cable to connect the smart meter to the IN port of the splitter.

  • Connect the supplied cable to the IN port of the splitter.
  • Connect the other end to the P1 port of the smart meter.
  • For the OUT ports, preferably use the cables supplied with your own P1 devices.

Always use the supplied cable for the connection between the smart meter and the IN port of the splitter.

2) Connect a USB-C power supply

When you connect multiple devices to the splitter, an external power supply is required.

The smart meter usually provides enough power for the splitter itself and sometimes one additional device, but generally not for multiple devices at the same time.

Therefore, connect a 5 V / 1 A USB-C power supply when using multiple devices.

Always make sure that the external power supply is connected when multiple devices are connected to the splitter.

3) Check the LEDs

The LEDs on the splitter provide information about the power supply and communication.

Red LED

The red LED indicates that external USB power or P1 power is available.

Please note: a lit red LED only indicates that power is present. It does not indicate that the available power is sufficient for all connected devices.

Blue LED at the IN port

The blue LED next to the IN port flashes when the splitter is connected to the smart meter and is receiving P1 data.

Blue LED at the OUT port

The blue LED next to an OUT port flashes when there is data communication with the connected device.

4) Check the OUT port

Is the connected device not working?

Try connecting the device to a different OUT port.

Check the following:

  • Is the cable properly connected?
  • Is the external USB power supply connected?
  • Is the blue LED next to the relevant OUT port flashing?
  • Does the device work when connected to a different OUT port?

If the device works on another OUT port while the power supply is connected, the original OUT port may be defective.

5) Check the LEDs step by step

Check the following:

IN port

  • Red LED is on โ†’ power is available
  • Blue IN LED is flashing โ†’ connection to the smart meter and P1 data are available

OUT port

  • Blue OUT LED is flashing โ†’ data communication with the connected device is active

If one of these indicators is missing, first check the cabling and power supply. You can also try a different OUT port.

6) Check the firmware of the connected devices

Make sure that all connected devices are running the latest available firmware version.

Some devices may experience problems with P1 communication when using older firmware versions.

This is known to occur with certain older firmware versions of devices from, among others:

  • Marstek
  • Zaptec

Always check whether a firmware update is available for the connected device.

7) Connect devices one at a time

Are you using multiple devices and experiencing problems?

Test the devices individually:

  1. Connect only the splitter to the smart meter.
  2. Check that the red LED is on.
  3. Check that the blue IN LED is flashing.
  4. Connect one device to an OUT port.
  5. Check whether the corresponding blue OUT LED is flashing.
  6. Then connect the other devices one at a time.

This allows you to determine which device or combination of devices is causing the problem.

Quick checklist

  • Use the supplied cable between the smart meter and the IN port
  • For the OUT ports, preferably use the cables supplied with your own P1 devices
  • When using multiple devices, connect a 5 V / 1 A USB-C power supply
  • Red LED is on โ†’ power is available
  • Blue IN LED is flashing โ†’ P1 data is being received
  • Blue OUT LED is flashing โ†’ data communication with the connected device is active
  • If there is a problem, try a different OUT port
  • Check the firmware of all connected devices
  • Test multiple devices one at a time
  • If a device only works on a different OUT port, contact Smart Gateways Support
