S0 gateway is not counting pulses
If your S0 gateway is not counting pulses, itβs usually due to either a sensor/detection issue or a wiring/configuration issue. Follow the steps below to solve the problem.
1) Check value and factor (most common)
Important: the gateway works internally with Wh.
- The value must always be entered in Wh.
- Use no dots or commas in the value.
Example
If your meter shows: 30.21 kWh
Then you must enter in the gateway: 30210
(so kWh β Wh, including the last decimal)
Set factor
The factor is shown on the meter or in the documentation.
- Meter shows 1000 imp/kWh β enter 1 as factor
- Meter shows 2000 imp/kWh β enter 0.5 as factor
So always make sure the value and factor match exactly.
2) Connect 12V and S1 correctly to the meterβs S0 contacts
- Connect 12V and S1 to the S0 contacts of the meter.
- Never connect GND to the S0 contacts!
This can cause the gateway to become defective.
If there are still no pulses, swap the wires. With some meters, polarity can be important.
3) Run a test: disconnect the wires, start the log, short the S0 wires together
- Disconnect the wires from the S0 connection on the meter.
- Open the gateway log:
https://smartgateways.nl/en/kb/view-gateway-log/ - Wait until the gateway has started up (you will see the IP address in the log).
- Now briefly short the S0 wires together (this simulates the pulse signal from the meter).
What you should see in the log
If everything is correct, you should see in the log that:
- pulses are increasing
- the value is going up
- and the increment matches the configured factor
If you see no pulses / no increment
Contact Smart Gateways Support.
After the test, reconnect the wires back to the S0 contacts on the meter.
- If pulses are registered during the test: the gateway is functional, and the cause is usually the meterβs S0 output, wiring, or settings.
4) No pulses after the test? Turn the S0 wires around (polarity may be important)
If there are still no pulses after the test:
- Swap/turn around the S0 wires on the meterβs S0 connections (polarity can be important on some meters).
- Check the log again to see whether pulses are now counted.
5) Check whether the S0 output on the meter is enabled
If it still doesnβt work:
- Check in the manual of your meter manufacturer whether the S0 output is enabled/activated.
- Enable the S0 output if needed, then test again.
Quick checklist
- 12V + S1 connected to S0 on the meter
- GND never connected to S0
- Value = Wh entered (without dot/comma)
- Factor matches imp/kWh on the meter
- During the short-wire test you see pulses increasing in the log
- If needed, wires swapped on the meter
- S0 output activated on the meter
