Why does the lighting flicker or not fully turn off after installing a dimmer?
A LED dimmer bypass, also known as a LED bypass or LED capacitor, is sometimes needed when dimming dimmable LED bulbs. This is due to the way LED bulbs operate and how dimmers are traditionally designed for dimming incandescent or halogen bulbs.
LED bulbs operate based on electronics and have a built-in power supply to convert electricity to the correct voltage for the LEDs. This power supply can be sensitive to the fluctuations in current that occur during dimming. Traditional dimmers for incandescent and halogen bulbs use a phase-cut or phase-trailing technique to adjust the light level. In these techniques, a portion of the electrical current is cut off to dim the light.
The problem arises when the minimum current cut off by the dimmer is too high for the electronic power supply in the LED bulb. This can result in flickering light, blinking lamps, or poor dimming performance. To solve this problem, a LED dimmer bypass is used.
